Matron, Grade I (to be called in future Matron and including Masseuses)

Matron, Grade II (to be called in future Senior Nursing

Sister and including X-Ray Sisters).

£420 by £20 to £480 (with an increase of one to the staff).

£300 by £15 to £420 (with

an increase of three to the staff).

Nursing Sisters.

£220 by £15 to £295 as at present, but after ten years promotion to grade of Senior Nursing Sister supermerary to the establishment, if necessary on recommendation of the Director of Medical Services.

The most important benefit secured by nursing sisters from

these changes will be the prospect which every efficient sister

will have of proceeding to a salary of at least £420 per annum.

It is reckoned that, allowing for the addition of £50 per annum

in respect of the value of quarters etc. provided for in the

Pensions Ordinance, 1932, a nursing sister who retires in

pensionable circumstances after sixteen years' service will

enjoy a pension of just over £3 per week, which Dr. Selwyn

Clarke suggests is commonly regarded as a reasonable figure.

4. If you approve I suggest that these new scales should come into operation with effect from 1st January, 1939. No

provision has been made in the estimates for that year, but the

members of the Finance Committee of Legislative Council have,

with one dissentient, agreed to supplementary provision being

made to this end.
